This formulation prevents coagulation by chelating calcium ions while the dextrose provides an energy source that helps maintain red blood cell viability during storage and transport. ACD Solution A is the standard anticoagulant for blood banking applications including blood group determination, HLA typing, and histocompatibility testing, where maintaining cellular integrity over extended periods is critical.
